Maxim's Group Enhances Business Continuity and Customer Service with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution helps ensure availability of business-critical applications and provides additional capacity for development and test capabilities on demand

One of Asia’s largest food, beverage and restaurant chains, Maxim’s Group, has selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to help ensure better business continuity for its mission critical applications. With Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS), Maxim’s is able to quickly, efficiently and securely scale its IT infrastructure on-demand, without upfront capital expenditure (CAPEX) requirements, to meet changing business demands. By being able to securely migrate data back and forth between its on-premise systems and the cloud, Maxim’s is now better placed to minimize the impact of any IT systems’ interruption on its business and customers. The company can also use the new capabilities to free up computing capacity for developing and testing internal applications to help make the Group more efficient, and to offer new options to customers for ordering online, instore and for home delivery.

Hong Kong-based Maxim's Group operates more than 1,800 outlets across Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and Southeast Asia. This includes the Starbucks franchise and it is one of the best known providers of mooncakes, a popular, traditional Chinese pastry. With the rapid digitization of its business in response to COVID-19 and ongoing geographic expansion, Maxim’s looked to leverage the cloud to strengthen its agility and capacity to respond rapidly to risks. To help meet these needs and with a long-standing relationship in place, Maxim’s Group chose to incorporate OCVS into its disaster recovery (DR) architecture to gain ‘hot back up’ capabilities for its on-premises, networked VMware environments, which can come into play even while the database is online and in use.

Mr. Louis Mah, director of Information Technology, Hong Kong Maxim’s Group, said, “We now operate in a digital world especially when it comes to the systems that run our day-to-day business, take customer orders and connect to third parties for food deliveries. With digital comes high expectations. We can’t afford for our business to stop - we don’t just operate 7am to 11pm anymore, it is truly 24/7. We also wanted to improve on our legacy infrastructure – having flexible and scalable access to real-time data as close to 100 percent is a critical success factor. With Oracle Cloud we can now offer better service to the business, our employees and our customers.”

Using OCVS, Maxim’s has automated its DR workflow and created a hybrid-cloud model for the company to ‘burst’ to gain 100 percent production-capacity support, as the need arises. This helps ensure continuous operations and minimize the impact of downtime on the business and customer experience. The use of OCVS has also allowed the company to free up space in its on-premises systems, especially when dealing with activities including month-end reporting, as workloads can be moved to the cloud in minutes, and back, as required. This ability to move workloads around has also provided the company with the ability to gain extra capacity-on-demand for development and testing activity.

As a dedicated, customer-managed and native VMware-based cloud environment, OCVS offers Maxim’s security and control over which version of the VMware software the company uses, and the team can use the VMware tools which it is familiar with. Maxim’s can also move VMware workloads back and forth from the Oracle Cloud without having to modify them in any way, giving the company the scale, agility and operational efficiency it was looking for from the cloud, plus centralized management.

Mr. Patrick Lo, vice president and geography managing director, Oracle Hong Kong and Taiwan, said, “Today, real-time access to data is critically important for businesses. To help with this, Oracle offers customers a wide range of advanced technologies that help manage risks and deliver business continuity. OCVS is a perfect example as it provides a hybrid-cloud environment that allows for rapid and easy migration of mission critical VMware workloads natively to the Oracle Cloud, without requiring any changes. This not only gives users the flexibility to expand at speed, but also helps reduce downtime and increase service levels. With OCVS, Maxim’s has a solid foundation for its ongoing digital transformation and can quickly and easily leverage adjacent cloud services like advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).”
