Business challenges

Budimex is the largest construction group in Poland. For over 50 years it has tackled large-scale projects such as roads, railways, airport infrastructure, and power plants.

Over time, Budimex had amassed nine different HCM systems, including Excel spreadsheets and other outdated tools, which were mostly incompatible and thus inconvenient to use.

“We would check employee performance on one system and switch to another for employee profiles or talent management,” says Cezary Mączka, vice president of HR, administration, and communication. “It was painful.”

Budimex decided to standardize on a single, cloud-based human capital management application to support its 8,000 employees.

“We are number one in the construction market. We wanted to be number one in terms of the software we’re using to service our people and the company,’ Mączka says. “We needed a system that combined all our needs into one place.”

Why Budimex Chose Oracle

Budimex did a side-by-side comparison of cloud applications, including ones from two of its legacy vendors, Workday and SAP. But the company chose Oracle Cloud HCM for the breadth of its capabilities, so that it could standardize all of its HCM processes on a single platform.

Advanced functionality mattered, too. “Oracle HCM had innovations like mobile access, and let us take advantage of machine learning and AI,” Mączka says.

Results

Budimex is in the midst of a phased implementation of Oracle Cloud HCM, with key business units on board and others slated to follow through 2021.

The application suite is helping Budimex recruit employees faster and keep them longer. The company also uses it for employee evaluation, goal-setting, career-development planning, compensation, talent identification, and succession management, as well as to forecast demand for employees with specialized skills and experience.

“Now we have everything at our fingertips, all on the same platform,” Mączka says. “The Oracle solution is simple and user-friendly.” One big reason: Many HCM tasks are now self-service.

Budimex managers and employees can access the HCM system no matter where they are. Mobile functionality makes it easy to update goals, performance, compensation, and other variables from constructions sites or en route.

Automation has eliminated manual processes, increased efficiency, and reduced errors. There’s greater flexibility, too. For example, administrators can grant managers partial access to employee records, allowing someone to authorize paid time off without viewing compensation. When appropriate, full access is just as easy to grant.

Budimex’s CFO, who also manages IT, is so impressed with the Oracle application that he’s modeling the company’s technology strategy in part on its HCM system.
